Contact time (dwell time) is the duration that a car wash chemical remains active on the vehicle surface before being rinsed off. In touchless washing, where there is no mechanical scrubbing, contact time is one of the three pillars of cleaning — alongside chemistry and water pressure.
Optimal contact time:
Most active foams require 2–5 minutes of contact time for full effectiveness. During this window:
- Surfactants penetrate and emulsify organic dirt.
- Alkalis trigger saponification of fats and oils.
- Chelating agents bind hard water minerals.
Too short — poor results:
Rinsing too early means the chemistry has not finished working. This is the most common operator error, especially in busy self-service bays where customers rush the process.
Too long — surface risk:
If foam dries on the surface, the concentrated residue can etch paint, stain trim, or leave difficult-to-remove spots. This is particularly risky in hot weather or direct sunlight.
How to maintain optimal dwell time:
- Apply foam from bottom to top, rinse from top to bottom — this naturally gives lower panels more contact time where dirt is heaviest.
- Foam stability matters: thick, clinging foam stays wet longer. Fortis Foam PRO is engineered for extended hang time.
