Touchless washing (also called contactless washing) is a car wash method where dirt is removed entirely by chemical action and water pressure, with no brushes, cloths, or sponges touching the vehicle surface. It is the dominant method in self-service car washes across Europe and increasingly popular in automated tunnel systems.
The touchless wash process:
- Pre-rinse — loose dirt and debris are flushed off with a high-pressure lance.
- Active foam application — active foam is sprayed onto the surface and left to dwell for the recommended contact time.
- High-pressure rinse — the dissolved contamination is blasted off.
- Optional acid rinse — removes limescale and mineral residue (see two-step washing).
Advantages:
- No risk of brush-induced swirl marks or scratches.
- Lower maintenance — no brushes to replace.
- Works on any vehicle shape, including commercial vehicles with irregular profiles.
The chemistry must work harder:
Without mechanical agitation, the chemical carries the entire cleaning burden. This demands high-quality surfactants, proper pH levels, and correct dilution ratios. Products like Fortis Foam PRO are specifically engineered for touchless applications. For more on wash method options, see types of car washes.
