pH  Meter

Why pH meters are essential tools for car wash operators managing chemical safety and performance.

A pH meter is an electronic instrument that measures the hydrogen ion concentration of a solution, giving a precise pH reading. While pH test strips offer rough estimates, a digital pH meter provides the accuracy needed to manage car wash chemistry safely and effectively.

When to measure pH:

  • Incoming water — baseline pH affects how your active foam performs after dilution.
  • Working solution — verify that the dilution ratio produces a pH within the product’s recommended range.
  • Wastewater — discharge regulations typically require pH between 6.5 and 9.0 before water enters the sewer.
  • Recycled water — in closed-loop systems, pH can drift as chemicals accumulate in recirculated water.

Maintenance tips:

  • Calibrate with pH 4.0 and pH 7.0 buffer solutions before each use session.
  • Store the electrode in storage solution (never dry or in distilled water).
  • Replace the electrode annually or when response time slows noticeably.

A pH meter complements a refractometer — together they give you full control over your chemistry. The refractometer tells you concentration; the pH meter tells you reactivity. For a deeper understanding, see our active foam pH guide.
